Capture the Monsters
You can assume that three to four students can use one set-up. (One student ‘sights’ the monster, the next student records the data, and the third student checks the work…they switch roles at each station.) I chose to have two-person teams.
Multiple stations are set up to mimic the graph paper locations A-F and 1 – 7. (Create more or fewer stations as needed to accommodate the class). Be sure to leave enough room between the stations for students to work comfortably – this is key to your success!
Students will look through the hole punched at the end of the arrow, and rotate the arrow until the monster is visible. The students then read the angle shown on the protractor. From there, the recorder draws a line from the station location at the correct angle to the end of the paper. The students should label the line with the monster label. They will repeat the process for multiple monsters, and from multiple locations. (Balance the time needed to find each monster with the time available for the students.)

Create the finder
The finder is made of a recycled paper box. Use a copier to make an 11x17" copy of a protractor. Tape it to the top of the box. Then, make an arrow and punch a hole at the end. Attach that to the protractor with a brad.

Set up the room
Copy the 'monsters' and attach them to a stand. Place them around the center of the room. Be sure students can identify the monsters from all directions.

Find the monsters
Students will complete the locator sheet identifying a straight line from their location to the monster.
