Fractals
|
Students will work together to build triangular pyramids. These will be combined such that the pattern will continue to repeat itself throughout the figure.
Supplies: # 6 3/4 Envelopes Tape Rulers Pencils/Pens Scissors Ideas for further questions: Looking at just one face - How many triangles are present? If we build another layer, how many triangles would that add? How does that surface area compare to the entire face of the triangle? How many more blue triangles would fit into the empty white spaces? The same questions can be asked of volume. Have students make a table and look for patterns. |
Making a Giant Fractal
Step One
Open the flap of the envelope and place it in front of you. Using a ruler, draw two diagonal lines along the envelope from corner to corner.
|
Step TwoUsing scissors, cut along the top of the envelope on the lines as shown. The flap will be removed.
|
Step Three
Fold the envelope several times on the lines, to make a firm crease.
|
Step Four
Step Five
Tape three of the pyramids together as shown on the left. Then add a fourth one on the top. I find it easiest to work with a partner for this step - tape works well if you place it along the edge of the two figures and pinch. Practice this first, before asking students to try it!
